- For most local service businesses, switch the location option from the default Presence or interest to Presence, so ads reach people actually in your area.
- Target the areas you actually serve using the city, postal codes or a radius, and exclude places you don't go.
- Use separate campaigns when nearby towns like Airdrie or Okotoks need different budgets, ads or hours.
- Check the locations reports monthly to see where clicks and conversions really came from, and tighten targeting from there.

A cleaning company in Cranston sets up Google Ads, types "Calgary" into the location box and hits save. A month later, the locations report shows clicks from Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto. Some of those people were planning a move. Most were just curious. None of them could book a cleaner for this Thursday.
That happens because Google Ads location targeting has a default setting most owners never open. Getting it right is one of the fastest ways to stop paying for clicks you can't use. Here's how to set your Calgary service area properly, including nearby towns, exclusions and how to check it's working.
01The setting that matters most: Presence vs Presence or interest
In your campaign settings, under Locations, there's a section called Location options. It usually starts collapsed, so it's easy to miss. Inside are two choices for who sees your ads.
| Option | Who it reaches | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Presence or interest (default) | People in or regularly in your locations, plus people anywhere who've shown interest in them | Hotels, tourism, moving companies, real estate aimed at out-of-province buyers |
| Presence | People in or regularly in your targeted locations | Almost every local service business: trades, cleaning, clinics, auto repair, salons |
With the default, someone in Winnipeg searching "best plumber Calgary" can see your ad. If you only fix pipes inside city limits, that's wasted money.
Open every Search campaign, expand Location options and switch to Presence. It takes two minutes and is one of the first changes we make in almost every local account we look at.
The exclusion setting
There's a matching option for excluded locations. The default excludes people who are in your excluded areas, which is what most businesses want. Leave it unless you have a specific reason to change it.
02Three ways to draw your service area
City, town or region
Typing "Calgary" targets the city as Google defines it. It's simple and works well if you genuinely serve the whole city. Add Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, Chestermere or Strathmore as separate locations if you go there.
Postal codes
Google Ads lets you target Canadian postal codes at the forward sortation area level, the first three characters of a code. That's the most precise option inside the city. If you only work in the south and southwest, a list of postal code areas covering those communities beats targeting all of Calgary. Use Canada Post's lookup tools to confirm which codes cover the communities you serve.
Radius
A radius draws a circle around an address, in kilometres or miles. It's quick, but a circle rarely matches a real service area. A 20 km circle from a shop in Foothills Industrial covers a lot of country you may not want, and cuts off communities you do.
Draw your service area on a map the way you actually dispatch: where you go happily, where you go for the right job, and where you never go. Target the first, consider the second, exclude the third.
03Calgary and nearby towns: one campaign or several?
If Calgary and the surrounding towns all get the same service, prices and response time, one campaign is fine. Split them into separate campaigns when:
- Budgets should differ. Most of your work is in Calgary and you want Airdrie to get a small, fixed share rather than whatever Google decides.
- The ad should say something different. An ad that names the town, like "Furnace repair in Okotoks," reads as more relevant to someone searching there than a generic Calgary ad.
- Hours or travel fees differ. If you only take Strathmore jobs on certain days, its campaign can run on a matching schedule.
- Results differ. If one area converts much better, separate campaigns make that easy to see and fund.
Separate campaigns can point to separate pages, too. A page about your service in Airdrie, with real details about the area, usually converts better than your homepage for those clicks.
04Exclusions: places to block on purpose
Exclusions are just as useful as targets. Common ones for Calgary businesses:
- Areas inside your radius you don't serve. If your circle reaches Bragg Creek and you don't go there, exclude it.
- Far-side towns. Targeting by radius from the north end can pull in places like Crossfield or Carstairs. Exclude them if they're not worth the drive.
- The rest of Canada. With Presence selected this mostly takes care of itself, but excluding obvious out-of-area cities doesn't hurt.
Location targeting controls where the searcher is. It doesn't stop someone in Calgary searching "roofer Red Deer." For that, add city names as negative keywords. Our negative keyword starter list includes a set for Calgary businesses.
05Location bid adjustments and automated bidding
With manual bidding, you can raise or lower bids by location, for example bidding more in the quadrants where your best jobs are. Most automated bid strategies, like maximise conversions, ignore manual location bid adjustments and make their own decisions using location as a signal.
If you use automated bidding and want an area to get more or less spend, separate campaigns with their own budgets are the more reliable lever. Location bid adjustments are worth using mainly with manual bidding. Understanding what drives the price of a click helps here too; our guide to Google Ads costs in Calgary covers it.
06How to check where your ads actually showed
Settings tell you what you asked for. Reports tell you what happened. Google Ads has a locations view in each campaign, with reports for where your targeted areas performed and where the people who saw or clicked your ads were. Check it monthly.
- Open the locations report for the last 30 days and look at where clicks and conversions came from.
- Look for surprises. Clicks from far outside your area usually mean the location option is still on Presence or interest.
- Compare areas. If one town or postal code area spends a lot with no calls, consider excluding it or giving it its own campaign.
- Cross-check with real leads. Your conversion data is only as good as your tracking. Make sure calls and forms are tracked properly so this report is worth reading.
Target where you work, exclude where you don't, and check the report to see which one Google listened to.
Ad schedule: the other half of "where"
Location and timing work together. If you can't answer the phone after 6 p.m. and nobody calls back until morning, showing ads at 9 p.m. in Bridgeland buys clicks you'll struggle to convert. Set an ad schedule that matches the hours someone can pick up, or at least lower spend outside them.
For emergency trades that genuinely run 24/7, leave the schedule open, but make sure the after-hours phone really gets answered. Once you have a few months of data, look at conversions by hour and day alongside location: some areas may convert well on weekday mornings and poorly on weekends, and that's worth knowing before you adjust budgets.
Other location settings to line up
Make the rest of your setup match your service area. Your Google Business Profile service areas should reflect the same places (see our Google Business Profile guide). If you run Local Services Ads, those use their own service area settings, separate from your regular campaigns. And if you also advertise on Facebook, set its location to match, which we touch on in Google Ads vs Facebook Ads.
07Common location targeting mistakes
Do
- Switch to Presence for local services
- Target the areas you actually serve
- Split towns into their own campaigns when budgets or hours differ
- Exclude areas you won't drive to
- Check the locations report monthly
Avoid
- Leaving the default Presence or interest on
- Targeting all of Alberta "to get more reach"
- Huge radius circles that cross into places you don't go
- Relying on bid adjustments with automated bidding
- Setting it once and never looking again
08Where Sidekick fits
When we set up a Google Ads account in our website and Google Ads package ($1,285 CAD), the location targeting is built around where you actually work, with Presence on, sensible exclusions and call and lead tracking so you can see what each area brings in. If you're running ads yourself, the Presence fix alone is worth doing today. See the package or book a free call.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Presence and Presence or interest in Google Ads?
Presence shows your ads to people who are in, or regularly in, your targeted locations. Presence or interest also includes people elsewhere who have shown interest in those locations, such as someone in Ontario searching about Calgary.
Which location option should a local service business use?
Usually Presence. Unless you serve people planning a move or booking from out of town, interest-based reach mostly adds clicks from people who can't hire you.
Can I target Calgary postal codes in Google Ads?
Yes. Google Ads supports Canadian postal code targeting at the forward sortation area level, the first three characters of a postal code. Search for the code in the location settings to confirm it's available.
Should I use radius targeting or a list of areas?
A list of cities and postal codes is usually more precise, because a circle rarely matches where you actually work. Radius targeting is fine for a quick start or for a business that truly serves everything within a set drive.
Why are my ads showing outside my target area?
The most common reason is the default Presence or interest option. Location signals also aren't perfect, so a small number of clicks from just outside your area is normal.
