That row is Google Local Services Ads (LSAs). For the right Calgary trades they are often the cheapest, most direct lead source on Google, because you pay per lead instead of per click. For others they're a frustrating mix of wrong-service calls and price shoppers. Here's how to tell which camp you're in, and how to set them up properly.
What Google Local Services Ads are
Local Services Ads are a separate ad product from regular Google Search ads. Instead of keywords and bids, you build a profile: your services, service area, hours, reviews and verification details. When someone searches for a service you offer in your area, Google can show your profile at the top of the results with a "Google Verified" badge.
The customer can call you or send a message directly from the ad. You're charged for a lead (a call or message about a service you offer), not for every click.
A note on the badge: if you've read older guides, they talk about "Google Guaranteed" and "Google Screened." In October 2025, Google replaced those badges with a single Google Verified badge and ended the old money-back guarantee program. Businesses that were already verified didn't have to redo anything.
Which Calgary businesses qualify?
In Canada, Local Services Ads are limited to home service categories. Google has expanded LSAs to many more business types in the U.S. (legal, real estate, health and so on), but those have not been rolled out in Canada as of 2026. Canadian categories currently include:
- Plumbers, electricians, HVAC
- Roofing, garage doors, window repair and window cleaning
- Lawn care and tree service
- House cleaning, carpet and upholstery cleaning
- Pest control, locksmiths, appliance repair
- Movers, junk removal, water damage services
Categories and areas change, so always confirm on Google's Local Services eligibility checker before planning around them. If your business isn't on the list (say you run a barbershop, an auto shop or a renovation company), regular Search ads and a strong Google Business Profile are your main options on Google.
How the pricing works
You set an average weekly budget, and Google charges you per lead up to that budget. What counts as a lead is a call, message or booking request related to your services. Google doesn't publish Canadian lead prices, and they vary by trade, season and how many competitors are active. As a rough guide, U.S. industry data puts many trades somewhere in the US$40 to US$60 per lead range, with plumbing, HVAC and roofing usually on the higher side. Expect Calgary costs in a similar ballpark once converted to CAD, and expect them to move.
Google reviews charged leads and automatically credits ones it judges invalid, like spam or wrong numbers. You can also flag a lead you think shouldn't have counted. Check your lead list weekly: it's the only way to know whether you're paying for real jobs.
| Local Services Ads | Google Search Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| You pay for | Each lead (call or message) | Each click |
| Who can use it in Canada | Home service categories only | Almost any business |
| Placement | Top of results, above regular ads | Top and bottom of results |
| Control | Services, area, hours, budget | Keywords, ads, bids, landing pages, schedule |
| Needs a website? | No (profile-based) | Yes, ideally a dedicated landing page |
| Setup time | Verification can take a few weeks | Can be live in a day |
| Biggest risk | Paying for off-target leads | Paying for clicks that never call |
How to set up Local Services Ads in Calgary, step by step
- Check eligibility for your category and your postal code on Google's Local Services site.
- Create your profile. Pick only the services you actually want. If you hate small repair jobs, don't tick them.
- Set your service area carefully. If you won't drive to Okotoks or Chestermere for a $200 job, leave them out. You can be specific about the areas you cover.
- Submit verification. Depending on the category, Google asks for things like business registration or licences, proof of insurance, and background checks for owners or technicians. Have your documents ready; verification usually takes a few weeks.
- Connect reviews. Your Google reviews feed the profile, and some categories require a minimum before you can run.
- Set hours you'll actually answer. More on why below.
- Set a weekly budget you can live with for at least 60 days, then judge on booked jobs, not lead count.
How to rank higher in Local Services Ads
You don't bid on keywords, so ranking comes down to signals Google can see about your business. The ones that matter most, based on Google's own guidance and what advertisers consistently report:
Answer the phone
Google tells advertisers directly that regularly missing calls or messages can hurt your ranking. If you're on a roof all day, route LSA calls to someone who can pick up, or shrink your hours to when you can.
Keep the reviews coming
Both your rating and your number of reviews count, and so does getting new ones regularly. A steady system for asking every happy customer beats a review blitz once a year. We wrote about building one in how to build a review system that runs itself.
Be close and be open
Proximity matters, so a Northeast Calgary electrician will generally show more often in Saddle Ridge than in Evergreen, on the opposite side of the city. And if your hours say you're closed, you won't show for that 9 p.m. search.
Mark leads and book jobs in the dashboard
Tracking which leads became booked jobs, and marking them in your account, helps you see true cost per job. Don't skip it.
LSAs reward the boring stuff: answering the phone, asking for reviews and keeping your profile honest.
Call your own LSA number from a friend's phone at 4 p.m. on a weekday. If it goes to voicemail, you're paying for leads you'll lose and teaching Google to rank you lower.
Are Google Local Services Ads worth it?
For a verified Calgary trade with good reviews and someone who reliably answers the phone, LSAs are usually worth testing first, because you pay for contact rather than curiosity. They work less well when your service list is too broad, when your reviews are thin, or when leads aren't followed up within minutes.
Most of our home service clients end up running LSAs and a small, tightly targeted Search campaign, because LSAs can't cover every service or every search. If you go that route, compare them on the same number: cost per booked job, not cost per lead or per click.
Sidekick connects LSA leads to the rest of your business: a simple CRM that logs every call, follow-up texts, and reporting that shows which leads turned into paid invoices. If that sounds useful, book a free call.

How much does a Local Services Ads lead cost in Canada?

What happened to the Google Guaranteed badge?
