Ask a Calgary plumber, electrician or HVAC owner where their best jobs came from last month and you usually get a shrug and "Google, I think." Ask what a booked job cost them in marketing and you get a longer pause. That is normal, and it is also the reason so many trades feel like they are paying more for leads every year. Home services lead generation in Calgary is not about finding one magic channel. It is about building a simple system where every lead is captured, answered fast and tracked to the job it became.
Here is that system in seven steps. You can do most of it yourself.
Step 1: Fix your Google Business Profile
For most home service searches, the map results get the first look. Before you spend a dollar on ads, make sure your profile is doing its job:
- The right primary category (Plumber, Electrician, HVAC contractor, and so on) and secondary categories that match real services.
- A service area that matches where you actually want to work, whether that is all four quadrants or just the south end plus Okotoks.
- Real photos of your trucks, your team and your work, added regularly.
- Correct hours, including whether you take emergency calls.
- A steady flow of reviews, with replies.
Step 2: Build pages that match how people search
People do not search for "home services." They search for "furnace not working," "hot water tank replacement Calgary" or "panel upgrade cost." Each of those deserves a page on your site that answers the question, shows you have done it before and makes it easy to book.
A strong service page has:
- A headline that matches the search ("Furnace Repair in Calgary").
- Tap-to-call and a short form above the fold on mobile.
- Price ranges or the factors that drive price.
- Photos from real jobs, ideally with the community named.
- Your licences, insurance and warranty.
Step 3: Choose your paid channels on purpose
Once the free foundations are in place, paid channels can add volume. They are not all equal. Here is how we would compare them for a typical Calgary home service business:
| Channel | You pay for | Best for | Time to results |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Local Services Ads | Each lead | Urgent, high-intent jobs in supported categories | Days to weeks, after verification |
| Google search ads | Each click | Specific high-value services and areas | Days, with testing |
| Facebook and Instagram ads | Impressions or clicks | Seasonal offers, awareness, retargeting | Days, with creative testing |
| Shared lead-selling sites | Each lead, often shared | Filling gaps in a slow week | Immediate, but you race competitors |
| Local SEO and content | Time or a writer | Long-term, lower-cost leads | Months |
Google's Local Services Ads currently cover a set of home service categories in Canada, including plumbers, electricians, HVAC, roofers, locksmiths, pest control, cleaning, carpet and window cleaning, appliance repair, lawn care, tree services, movers, junk removal, water damage, and window repair. If your trade is on that list, Local Services Ads are usually worth testing first because you pay per lead, not per click. If it is not, Google search ads with tight targeting are the usual starting point. Our guide to Local Services Ads in Calgary covers setup.
Step 4: Send paid traffic to the right page
One of the most common and expensive mistakes we see: ads that send people to the home page. Someone who searched "emergency plumber" and clicked your ad should land on a page about emergency plumbing, with your phone number in giant type, not a page about your company history. Matching the page to the ad usually improves both conversion and ad cost. Our post on ad landing pages that convert goes into detail.
Every dollar you spend on ads is only as good as the page it lands on and the person who answers the phone.
Step 5: Answer every lead fast
This is the step that separates growing companies from busy ones. Home service customers often contact several companies at once, and the one that responds first has a real head start.
- Answer calls live during business hours, or use an answering service. A voicemail is often a lost job.
- Auto-reply to forms and LSA messages by text within a minute: "Thanks, this is [Business]. We got your request and will call you by [time]."
- Return missed calls by text automatically, so the caller knows you saw it.
- Put every lead in one list. A shared spreadsheet is better than nothing; a simple CRM is better than a spreadsheet.
Call your own business number at 7 p.m. tonight and fill out your own website form. Note how long it takes to get any response. That number is probably costing you more than your ad budget.
Step 6: Follow up on every quote
A surprising number of quotes in home services just sit there. The customer meant to get back to you, got busy and then hired whoever called them again. A simple follow-up rhythm fixes this:
- Send the quote the same day as the visit, if you can.
- Check in two or three days later with a short, friendly message.
- Check in again a week later, and offer to answer questions.
- Close the loop politely after that, and add them to a seasonal reminder list.
If any of that follow-up is promotional, Canada's anti-spam law (CASL) applies. People who made an inquiry generally count as implied consent for six months, and paying customers for two years. Every message needs your business name and an easy opt-out. Our guide to automating lead follow-up shows how to put this on autopilot.
Step 7: Track cost per booked job, not cost per lead
Cost per lead is what ad platforms report. Cost per booked job is what actually matters. A channel that produces cheap leads that never book is more expensive than one with pricey leads that close.
Track, at minimum, for each source:
- Leads received
- Quotes sent
- Jobs booked
- Revenue from those jobs
- Marketing spend
Divide spend by jobs booked. Do it monthly. Within a season, you will know which channels to grow and which to cut. Call tracking numbers make this far easier for phone-heavy businesses.
Home services lead generation around Calgary's seasons
Calgary's weather shapes demand for almost every trade. Furnace calls spike with the first cold snap, plumbing with frozen lines and spring thaw, roofing and siding after summer hail, landscaping in a tight May to October window. Raise budgets before your busy season starts, not once it is already underway, and use slow months to collect reviews, build pages and follow up with past customers.

Sidekick builds the pieces of this system that are hard to do alone: landing pages for each service, lead capture that feeds one list, instant text replies, quote follow-ups that run on their own, and dashboards that show cost per booked job by channel. Frequently asked questions
What is the best lead source for home services in Calgary?
For most trades, a well-run Google Business Profile with steady reviews is the strongest free source, and Google Local Services Ads are often the best first paid channel for supported categories.
Which home services can use Google Local Services Ads in Canada?
Supported categories include plumbers, electricians, HVAC, roofers, locksmiths, pest control, cleaning, lawn care, tree services, movers, junk removal and several others. Check eligibility for your area when you sign up.
Why should I track cost per booked job instead of cost per lead?
Cheap leads that rarely book can cost more per job than expensive leads that close well. Cost per booked job shows which channels actually produce revenue.
How fast should a home service business respond to a lead?
As fast as possible. Customers often contact several companies at once, so an instant text acknowledgment and a call back within minutes give you a real advantage.
